Earth Smart Science

The Earth Smart Science Schools Program is a very successful initiative of the Queensland Government.  Initial funding for the program ran for three years from 2010 to 2012.  Approximately 1000 schools across the State have become ESS schools and work to reduce their ecological footprint through the development and implementation of a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP). The implementation and monitoring of a SEMP encourages a whole of school approach to wisely managing school resources.
The SEMP focusses on waste minimisation(by 50%), water conservation(by 15%), energy efficiency(by 30%) and biodiversity improvements.
For more information about Sustainability and tips on how to write a SEMP please look at The Queensland Sustainable Schools (QSS) Website

Sustainability is one of the cross curriculum priorities in the Australian Curriculum providing numerous opportunities where Earth Smart Science can be fully integrated on a day to day basis without being seen as an “extra workload”.

TEEC intends to continue to support 26 local ESS schools.  This support will be tailored to the needs of the individual school and may include a school visit to support curriculum, borrowing of TEEC’s ESS resources or a residential camp with an ESS focus.
Links to each of our local ESS schools are provided below.  These links have been set up as a sharing site for teachers.  Please click on each school to view their Earth Smart Science activities and projects.
