Simulation activity
Aim
- To involve pupils in a realistic debate/discussion session to encourage them to put forward their ideas on how we should manage our environment.
- To encourage pupils to develop the correct environmental ethic.

- Pens, cardboard, colours, scissors
Objectives
- To have pupils work cooperatively in small group situations to prepare and present ideas. Arguments to support an opposite stance.
- To have pupils participate in group discussion
Lesson plan
Step 1: Scenario: There has been a proposal put forward by the developer to build high-rise apartments on the shore of Tinaroo Dam. This is the first such proposal for the small township of Tinaroo.
Step 2: Group Discussion and Preparation: Each group of pupils will represent and present the thoughts of one of the following interested parties:
- Local Council
- Developers
- Tourist Operators
- Caravan and Motel Owners
- Tinaroo Ratepayer's Association
- Conservation Society
The first three parties support the proposal, the others are opposed to the idea. Groups are now given time to prepare arguments, banners, slogans and cards.
Step 3: Debate/Discussion The teacher can conduct the debate / discussion session. Each group to put forward their ideas. Discuss the importance of the process the pupils have just completed - try to relate to real situation in the town or area in which the pupils live.
