Coal, oil and gas are referred to as fossil fuels because they are made from dead and decaying plants and animals. This process takes millions of years as layers of mud and sand build up over the animal and plant remains. Time and the pressure of the weight above, changes it to coal, oil or gas. These products are mined and burnt as fuel to make energy.
