  • Effective leaders listen to the ideas and opinions of other people.
  • Effective listening helps you to represent others because you know about their concerns.  It also helps you to set goals, clarify what needs to be done and delegate tasks.
  • Admired leaders will listen to others when they have problems, then help them to deal with or overcome their difficulties.
  • Good leaders listen twice as much as they speak.
  • Remember that you have two ears and one mouth!! 

Tips on how to be an effective listener

  1. You make eye contact with others when they speak           
  2. You respond to others when they speak, usually using their first name  
  3. You make others feel good about themselves              
  4. You avoid ridiculing others, their problems or ideas          
  5. You check with the other person that you are hearing the right message    
  6. You consider other people’s feelings and ideas when you speak or act
