• Effective leaders are generally considered helpful or supportive by other students.
• They are the people that they will go to if they are having problems at school.
• Students need to be able to trust you to help them and to take their problem seriously.
• You can help others in numbers of ways:
• listening to them and taking them seriously
• helping them find a solution
• reassuring them that they will be okay
• encouraging them and showing faith in their ability
• helping them get the advice or assistance that they need from you or someone else.
• showing them how to do something that are struggling with.

Tips on how to be supportive

1. You stop and listen to others when they are having difficulty        
2. You are friendly and approachable for everyone                
3. You help others without waiting to be asked             
4. You think ahead to anticipate what people in your group need
