Sustainability - What is it?

Lesson Purpose

  1. What – Introduce the concept of Sustainability – what does this mean?
  2. Use the interactive whiteboard to show how students will practice living sustainably while at the Centre by reducing - Waste – they will sort, compost, reuse, recycle and therefore minimize the waste sent to landfill. Water – they will minimize their water use through having short showers. Energy – they will minimize their energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lights and electrical devices.
  3. Understand the need to preserve and care for the biodiversity of the local area.

Year 4

Science

Science Understanding

Biological sciences

  • Living things have life cycles.
  • Living things depend on each other and the environment to survive.
Science as a Human Endeavour

Nature and development of science

  • Science involves making predictions and describing patterns and relationships.
Use and influence of science
  • Scientific knowledge helps people to understand the effect of their actions.

HASS

Unit 2 : Sustainable use of places

  • The importance of environments, including natural vegetation, to animals and people.
  • The use and management of natural resources and waste, and the different views on how to do this sustainably.
  • The custodial responsibility Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have for Country/Place, and how this influences views about sustainability.

Year 5

Science

Science Understanding

Biological sciences

  • Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment.

Science as a Human Endeavour

Use and influence of science

  • Scientific knowledge is used to solve problems and inform personal and community decisions.

HASS

Unit 1 : People and the environment

  • The influence of people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, on the environmental characteristics of Australian places
  • The environment and human influences on the location and characteristics of a place and the management of spaces within them.
Unit 5 : Australian communities of the future
  • The difference between needs and wants and why choices need to be made about how limited resources are used.
  • Types of resources (natural, human, capital) and the ways societies use them to stisfy the needs and wants of present and future generations.
  • Influences on consumer choices and methods that can be used to make informed personal consumer and financial choices.

Year 6

Science

Science Understanding

Biological sciences

  • The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment.

Earth and space sciences

  • Sudden geological changes and extreme weather events can affect Earth’s surface.

Science as a Human Endeavour

Nature and development of science

  • Science involves testing predictions by gathering data and using evidence to develop explanations of events and phenomena and reflects historical and cultural contributions.

Use and influence of science

  • Scientific knowledge is used to solve problems and inform personal and community decisions.

Year 7

Science

Science Understanding

Biological sciences

  • Classification helps organise the diverse group of organisms.
  • Interactions between organisms, including the effects of human activities can be represented by food chains and food webs.

Earth and space sciences

  • Some of earth's resources are renewable, including water that cycles through the environment, but others are non-renewable.

Science as a Human Endeavour

Nature and development of science

  • Science knowledge can develop through collaboration across the disciplines of science and the contributions of people from a range of cultures.

Use and influence of science

  • Solutions to contemporary issues that are found using science and technology, may impact on other areas of society and may involve ethical considerations.
  • People use science understanding and skills in their occupations and these have influenced the development of practices in areas of human activity.

HASS

Unit 3 : Water in the world

  • The classification of environmental resources and the forms that water takes as a resource.
  • The quantity and variability of Australia's water resources compared with other continents.
Unit 4 : Analysing liveability
  • The influence of environmental quality on the liveability of places.

Geography

Geographical Knowledge and Understanding

Unit 1 : Water in the world

  • The classification of environmental resources and the forms that water takes as a resource.
  • The quantity and variability of Australia's water resources compared with other continents.
  • The nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it, including studies drawn from Australia and West Asia and/or North Africa.
Unit 2 : Place and liveability
