VET training and assessment at TEEC in outdoor activity areas for teachers and other outdoor leaders is not being offered for the remainder of 2019. The delivery of VET training and assessment will be reviewed at the end of the year for 2020.

Introduction

Tinaroo Environmental Education Centre (TEEC) works in partnership with Maroon Outdoor Education Centre (RTO #32122) to deliver quality training and assessment in outdoor activities for Teachers and others who work with school students, to meet the leader requirements of the Education QLD Curriculum Area Risk Assessment Guidelines (CARAs).

Activity Areas

The most common areas requested for outdoor activity training are bushwalking and canoeing. Training and assessment in other activity areas is possible, contact Phil Harrison at TEEC to discuss your training needs.

Course Structure

Skills Training

Skills Training days are offered for those who want to undertake Guide level training, but need to refresh the personal skills of the activity. These days at TEEC usually run on a Thursday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, immediately before a Guide Training Course.

Guide Training

Guide Training based TEEC usually runs from 5pm on Thursday through to 4pm on Saturday. Most courses involved an overnight lightweight camp on the Friday evening.

Assessment

Assessment will be negotiated with individual course participants. Depending on the level of skill demonstrated, and evidence presented, on the Guide Training course, all or some of the assessment may be completed. Often however, a participant will need to organise an assessment activity, leading a group in the field.

Details

Teachers and other Leaders will need to demonstrate competence in leading student groups during this type of activity by:

  • Applying the skills briefly outlined in the unit descriptions above.
  • Leading student groups in a similar location on a minimum of 3 occasions.
  • Personally participating in similar or higher level trips to other venues on at least 3 occasions.
  • Conducting and recording the risk assessment process for the trips with students
  • Planning and successfully leading the trips with students
  • Concluding the activity successfully and recording the process and results.

Note that the weekend at TEEC involves both gap training and assessment of current level of skill. All participants will need to come prepared to demonstrate their skills.

Costs and enrolment

Contact Phil Harrison at TEEC to express interest in Guide training courses, or for details of the costs. The timing and cost of any additional assessment required is to be negotiated. Participants will need to provide their own meals and will camp out each night. Whilst participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, TEEC has a supply of outdoor gear (tents, mats, stoves, packs, etc) that may be borrowed.
